Bobby Bowden honored at Westbury Christian

Over the weekend, Westbury Christian football coach and 1993 Heisman Trophy winner Charlie Ward honored his ex-Florida State coach Bobby Bowden at the second annual Charlie Ward Tribute to Excellence, which in conjunction with Westbury Christian School aims to raise money so the program can build a new athletic facility.

“I am very excited about the new athletic complex, and I cannot wait to utilize the space to further develop WCS athletes,” Ward said in a statement.

The former New York Knicks guard also invited his ex-Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy, who coached the Houston Rockets from 2003-07, to emcee the event that honored Bowden. Under Bowden’s tutelage, Ward helped guide the Seminoles to the 1993 national championship.

Eighteen years later, Ward continues to lean on Bowden for advice during the next chapter of his career.

“As I lead the young men of the Westbury Christian School football team, I am dedicated to demonstrating the same Christian example Coach Bowden constantly displayed in the five years I was privileged to play under his direction at Florida State,” Ward said. ” I am honored for the opportunity to recognize his efforts though this event, provide more opportunities for enrichment and spiritual growth for members of the Brays Oaks community, and assist the student athletes of Westbury Christian School.”

Indianapolis Colts coach Tony Dungy was the first recipient of the Charlie Ward Tribute to Excellence last year.
